Skulls

A little confession: for a long time I felt that Warhammer's models had way too many skulls decorating their buildings and other bits of terrain. Yes, it's a world filled with bloody battles and terrible wars; but to think of inserting a pile of skulls in every other wall seemed to me an exaggeration.
But then I remembered a place I visited in Portugal about two years ago. A lovely town called Évora, which oozes of History. And one of the most notorious historical buildings is a chapel called "Capela dos Ossos", literally meaning "Chapel of Bones".

This macabre construction does justice to its name: over five thousand skulls and other bones ornament the walls and pillars. The bones apparently were taken from cemeteries nearby and stuck to the walls of the chapel.

And to make it even more sinister, there is a message by the entrance that greets its visitors: "We bones, lying here, for your bones we wait".

After this, something like the Temple of Skulls will sound like the kind of place to spend your honeymoon!

  1. I know this chapel too. I've been there once and it's a bit sinister indeed. But also kind of cool ;)
